4G LTE

For those looking for unlimited range, WiDV equipment can use a 4G LTE network for communication between the transmitter and the receiver. To achieve this, WiDV uses a Huawei e3372 usb dongle.

WiDV supports all its features ( Full HD video, encryption, OSD, birectional telemetry, joystick control, ground control station, ... ) when using 4G..

Current WiDV Two Professional kit owners can upgrade their firmware to take advantage of 4G.

Requirements

  • A WiDV Professional kit.
  • One or two Huawei e3372 usb dongles, depending on your requirements. Each usb dongle will require a SIM card from your local 4G operator.
  • Ensure the SIM PIN is disabled on your SIM card. You can switch off the SIM PIN by using a regular mobile phone.

Configuration

Secret passphrase

When using 4G, the transmitter and receiver will use the Internet to communicate between them. In order to make to find each other possible, both devices need to share a secret passphrase. This passphrase can be added on the configuration file.

  • The passphrase has to be the same on the transmitter and on the receiver.
  • The passphrase has to be at least 12 characters long and less or equal than 64 characters.
  • The passphrase can only contain alphanumeric characters. Any other characters apart from letters and numbers are not permitted. Spaces are not permitted either.
  • Write down the passphrase as you might need it later to debug any possible issues by using the WiDV 4G console.

Receiver

  • The receiver can be connected to the Internet either by using its Ethernet port or a 4G usb dongle.

Receiver using Ethernet port

  • Connect WiDV receiver to the Internet using its Ethernet port. This could be a LAN with a router with access to the Internet.
  • Add the following settings on the configuration file of your receiver to allocate an ip to the receiver and to enable video ip. Update the ip, netmask and gateway fields according to your network's environment.

tcp_serial is used to connect tools like Mission planner to WiDV for full-duplex telemetry. More information available here.

Receiver using 4G

  • Insert a SIM card and connect the e3372 usb dongle to the WiDV receiver.
  • Add the following lines to the the configuration file of your receiver.

Transmitter

Transmitter using 4G

  • Insert a SIM card and connect the e3372 usb dongle to WiDV transmitter.
  • Add the following lines to the the configuration file of your transmitter.

Troubleshooting

There are a many 4G operators across the globe and each of them connect users to the Internet in many different ways. We are fully aware about the problems this might cause and this is why at Wireless Digital Video we have developed a tool to debug and solve any problems that you might find while trying to configure your WiDV equipment.

Visit https://console.wirelessdv.com to access the WiDV 4G console and introduce the passphrase that you configured in the previous steps. The console will analyze the Internet connectivity of your equipment and help to debug any problems you might be facing.

Data usage

WiDV uses a dynamic algorithm for video transmission so the data consumption depends on the enviroment. In worst case scenario the data consumption on 4G would be:

  • HD: 2.6 Mbits/s
  • FULL HD: 5.2 Mbits/s
